About

Geography

Great Edstone is a hill village on an oval mound of boulder clay left by glaciers in about 30,000 BC. Rising 30m above the surrounding land, it overlooks the Vale of Keldholme to the north, the village of Marton to the east and the immense tract of water meadows, known as ings, to the south and west. The village has a population of around 200 with several working farms, the church of St Michael and All Angels, and a Village Room (the old schoolhouse), which is used for village meetings.

Local Government

The District of Ryedale is divided into 121 Parishes of which 91 Parishes are large enough to have their own Parish Councillors. The remaining Parishes hold regular Parish Meetings. Every Parish must have an annual Parish Meeting, which all Local Government electors for the Parish are entitled to attend. Elections for Parish/Town Council Elections are held at the same time as District Elections and Parish/Town Councillors are elected for a term of four years.

Edstone is one of the 30 Parishes without Parish Councillors. However, a Parish Meeting is held at least annually and also whenever there is a local planning application to be considered. Details will appear on this website and on the village noticeboard.
